We built a device that allows anyone, anywhere, to make clean water most sustainably.
Globally, almost a billion people do not have regular access to clean water. Plus, water contamination and salinity levels in surface and groundwater are increasing. And global warming is leading to more environmental disasters that make clean water inaccessible. The water scarcity problem is getting worse.
Some technologies clean heavily contaminated water to solve the water scarcity problem. But, they are large, heavyweight, energy-consuming, and complex. These systems are expensive and not environmentally friendly. These solutions are inaccessible to the communities that need them the most.
Our challenge was compressing an advanced water treatment station and a water quality monitoring system into a simple backpack.
And today, I would like to introduce you to the Otterpack.
It is a lightweight, portable water purification system that can turn ANY contaminated water source into high-quality, delicious water in minutes.
The Otterpack will purify up to two liters of water every minute by rotating a manual handle. It’s energy-independent and can be used even in off-grid locations or during natural disasters without access to power.
The system can filter out the most dangerous toxins using the comprehensive Reverse Osmosis technology.
People can use the system without technical skills at all. Durable components and simple processes ensure the system works for many years and is cost-effective.
The system can be easily connected to a rechargeable battery, a vehicle accumulator, or solar panels if any basic infrastructure is available.
These are just a few examples of the contaminants the Otterpack will remove. The Otterpack can immediately eliminate the worst contaminants and deliver clean, drinkable water.
Otterpack is not only a fantastic high-tech device but since the system’s output is similar to commercially bottled water, it is a business opportunity for users to sell purified water to support the system’s financial sustainability over time.
Each local community runs and maintains the Otterpack systems; therefore, every user becomes a WASH expert, boosting people’s awareness and understanding of water and sanitation.
We want to bring Otterpack to as many at-risk communities as possible worldwide. We can and will help millions have more accessible, sustainable, and affordable access to clean water.
